About this supplement

What Is Milk Thistle?

A tall spiny thistle with purple flower heads and white-marbled leaves, native to the Mediterranean and now growing wild across much of the world. The seed is the part used. Two old bitter herbs join it here: dandelion root and artichoke leaf.

How It Works in the Body

The seed's active fraction is silymarin, and it is not one compound but a set of flavonolignans: silybin A and B, isosilybin, silychristin and silydianin, with the flavonoid taxifolin alongside them. They dissolve poorly in water, and the gut wall and liver attach sugar and sulfate groups to them quickly, so a good share returns to the gut in bile and is taken up again. The other two plants work at the other end of digestion. Artichoke leaf carries cynarin and related caffeoylquinic acids; dandelion root is bitter from its sesquiterpene lactones.

What It Supports

  • Measured silymarin: The extract is standardized, at 240 mg of silymarin flavonolignans per serving.
  • Bile flow: Artichoke leaf has a long record of use as a bitter that supports normal bile flow.
  • Fat digestion: Bile emulsifies the fat in a meal, which is why these bitters were traditionally taken at the table.
  • A prebiotic fiber: Dandelion root is one of the richest plant sources of inulin, which gut bacteria ferment.

Who It May Suit

People who want the traditional milk-thistle-and-bitters combination in a single capsule rather than three separate herbs, and anyone who prefers a one-capsule serving. The capsule is plant cellulose, so it fits vegetarian and vegan eating.

Good To Know

All three plants here belong to the daisy family, milk thistle included. Talk with your healthcare provider before use if you react to ragweed, daisies or marigold, if you are pregnant, or if you have gallstones or a blocked bile duct, since bitter herbs that act on bile are not appropriate there.

FAQ

Common questions

What is milk thistle?

Silybum marianum, a thistle in the daisy family with purple heads and white-veined leaves. Its seeds carry silymarin, the flavonolignan complex the plant is known for. This capsule pairs a standardized seed extract with dandelion root and artichoke leaf, two bitter herbs from the same broad plant family.

How does it work?

Silymarin is a set of closely related flavonolignans, each built from a flavonoid half and a lignan half. They are poorly water-soluble and heavily conjugated after absorption, and much of what is absorbed returns to the gut in bile. The two bitters work differently, through taste and through bile.

What makes this formula different?

Three plants in one capsule. Alongside 300 mg of extract standardized to 240 mg of silymarin per serving, there is dandelion root at 100 mg and artichoke leaf at 50 mg, which makes the capsule a small bitters formula rather than a single herb.

Who is it for?

People who like a traditional bitter herb combination and want it in one plant-cellulose capsule. A serving is a single capsule, which suits anyone who would rather not swallow several. Vegetarian and vegan eating is covered, as no ingredient is animal-derived.

What should I know before taking it?

Milk thistle, dandelion and artichoke are all daisy relatives, so talk with your healthcare provider before use if you react to ragweed, chrysanthemum or marigold. Ask as well if you have gallstones or a blocked bile duct, if you are pregnant, or if you take a prescription medicine the liver clears.
