About this supplement

What Is Sulforaphane?

Sulforaphane is the sharp-tasting molecule behind broccoli's bite, the same branch of chemistry as mustard and horseradish. It is an isothiocyanate, and the plant does not carry it ready-made. Seeds hold a precursor instead — a glucosinolate called glucoraphanin. This is a broccoli seed extract standardized to 0.5% sulforaphane, at 50 mg per serving.

How It Works in the Body

In an intact seed, glucoraphanin and the enzyme that acts on it, myrosinase, sit in separate compartments. Damage the tissue by chewing or milling and the two meet: myrosinase clips the sugar off glucoraphanin, the leftover fragment rearranges, and sulforaphane is what comes out. Gut bacteria can run the same conversion further along when the plant's own myrosinase has been heat-treated away.

Once absorbed, sulforaphane meets the body's phase-II conjugation chemistry. A glutathione S-transferase joins it to glutathione, the conjugate is trimmed down, and it leaves in urine as a mercapturic acid.

What It Supports

  • Glucosinolate source: Broccoli seed is the part of the plant richest in glucoraphanin, sulforaphane's precursor.
  • Conjugation chemistry: The phase-II enzymes tag sulforaphane with glutathione, and it supports normal conjugation.
  • Antioxidant defense: As a reactive isothiocyanate it acts on the cysteine thiols in the body's antioxidant defenses.
  • Cruciferous chemistry: Concentrates chemistry otherwise found in broccoli, cabbage and kale.

Who It May Suit

Suits people who rarely eat cruciferous vegetables, or who cook them until soft — heat destroys the plant's own myrosinase. The capsule is hypromellose and the rest is rice flour and maltodextrin, so it fits vegetarian and vegan eating.

Good To Know

There is no added myrosinase here, which matters for products standardized to glucoraphanin; what is counted here is sulforaphane itself. Isothiocyanates are reactive by nature and sit poorly with some people on an empty stomach. Talk with your healthcare provider before use if you are pregnant or nursing, or if you are managing a thyroid condition — cruciferous compounds can interfere with how the thyroid takes up iodine.

FAQ

Common questions

What is sulforaphane?

An isothiocyanate — the class of sharp sulfur compounds behind mustard, horseradish and broccoli. Plants carry a precursor instead, a glucosinolate called glucoraphanin. This product is a broccoli seed extract standardized to 0.5% sulforaphane, at 50 mg per serving, in a single capsule.

How does it work?

Glucoraphanin and the enzyme myrosinase sit in separate compartments of an intact seed. When the tissue is damaged they meet, and myrosinase turns glucoraphanin into sulforaphane. Once absorbed, sulforaphane is joined to glutathione by a glutathione S-transferase and leaves in urine as a mercapturic acid.

What makes this form different?

It comes from seed rather than sprout or floret, and the extract is standardized to sulforaphane itself rather than to its precursor. Broccoli seed carries the densest glucosinolate content in the plant. Rice flour, maltodextrin and magnesium stearate make up the rest of the capsule.

Who is it for?

People who rarely eat broccoli, cabbage, kale or Brussels sprouts, or who cook them until soft, since heat destroys the plant's own myrosinase. The capsule shell is hypromellose and none of the ingredients are animal-derived, so it fits vegetarian and vegan eating.

What should I know before taking it?

Talk with your healthcare provider before use if you are pregnant or nursing, if you take thyroid medicine, or if you are managing a thyroid condition. Cruciferous compounds can interfere with iodine uptake, which matters most when iodine intake is already sparse. Isothiocyanates are reactive, and some people find them hard on an empty stomach.
