About this supplement

What Is NAC + Selenium?

NAC is N-acetyl cysteine: the amino acid cysteine with an acetyl group attached to its nitrogen. That small addition makes the molecule stable enough to hold up on the way through the gut. The selenium here comes as L-selenomethionine, the form selenium takes in food plants.

How It Works in the Body

Glutathione is a short peptide of three amino acids: glutamate, cysteine and glycine. Cells build it continuously, and cysteine is the part that runs short, so cysteine availability sets the pace of the whole assembly. NAC delivers cysteine, and the acetyl group comes off once the molecule is inside.

Selenium matters one step later. The glutathione peroxidase enzymes hold selenium as selenocysteine at their active site, and they are what put glutathione to work.

What It Supports

  • Glutathione synthesis: Cysteine is the limiting ingredient, and NAC is a way of delivering it.
  • Antioxidant defense: Selenium supports the glutathione peroxidase enzymes that hold oxidative damage in check.
  • Normal immune function: Selenium is required for normal immune function.
  • Thyroid biology: Selenium acts as a cofactor in the enzymes that activate thyroid hormone.

Who It May Suit

People building on the body's own antioxidant machinery rather than adding antioxidants ready-made from fruit and plants. Selenium in food tracks the soil a crop grew in, so intake varies more than it does for most minerals. The capsule is plant-based.

Good To Know

One capsule carries 600 mg of NAC and 25 mcg of selenium per serving. Selenium has a narrow gap between enough and too much, so count what your other supplements and any Brazil nuts already contribute. Talk with your healthcare provider before use if you take nitroglycerin or a blood thinner, or if you are pregnant.

FAQ

Common questions

What is NAC?

N-acetyl cysteine: the amino acid cysteine carrying an acetyl group on its nitrogen. Cysteine on its own oxidizes readily and is awkward to work with, and the acetyl group solves that. Once inside a cell the group comes off and ordinary cysteine is what remains.

How does it work in the body?

Cells assemble glutathione from glutamate, cysteine and glycine, and cysteine is the one in shortest supply, which makes it the limiting step. NAC provides cysteine. Selenium then sits at the active site of the glutathione peroxidase enzymes as selenocysteine, which is how glutathione actually gets used.

Why are NAC and selenium paired?

Because they act at two ends of the same system. NAC provides the raw material for glutathione; selenium is built into the enzymes that spend it. A capsule carries 600 mg of NAC with 25 mcg of selenium as L-selenomethionine per serving, which is the food form of the mineral.

Who is it for?

People who would rather work on the body's own antioxidant enzymes than take antioxidants directly, and anyone whose diet is light on selenium-rich foods. Selenium in crops depends on the soil, so it varies by region. The capsule is plant-based, so vegetarian and vegan eating are covered.

What should I know before taking it?

Selenium has a narrow margin between an adequate intake and too much, so add up what your other supplements contribute. Talk with your healthcare provider before use if you take nitroglycerin or another nitrate, a blood thinner, or if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. NAC has a faint sulfur smell, which is normal.
