About this supplement
What Is Methylated B12?
Vitamin B12 is the only vitamin built around a metal: a cobalt ion held inside a corrin ring that only bacteria know how to make. This is methylcobalamin, one of the two coenzyme forms the body actually uses, with a methyl group parked on the cobalt.
How It Works in the Body
Methylcobalamin works with methionine synthase, the enzyme that takes a methyl group from folate and uses it to make methionine. Methionine then becomes SAMe, the main methyl donor the body spends on DNA, neurotransmitters and the myelin sheath around nerve fibers. Cells convert some cobalamin to the other coenzyme form, adenosylcobalamin, which works in mitochondria on fats and branched-chain amino acids.
What It Supports
- Nervous system: B12 is required for the myelin that insulates nerve fibers.
- Energy metabolism: It plays a role in turning food into fuel cells can spend.
- Red blood cells: Cobalamin is required for normal red blood cell formation.
- Methylation: It keeps methyl groups moving through the folate cycle.
Who It May Suit
People eating vegan or mostly plant-based diets, since B12 comes only from animal foods, fortified foods or supplements. Older adults, who take up less B12 from food as stomach acid changes with age. Anyone who prefers a methylated form over cyanocobalamin.
Good To Know
Methylcobalamin is water-soluble, and the liver holds a reserve that turns over slowly. Talk with your healthcare provider before use, especially if you take metformin or acid-blocking medication, since both can affect how much B12 you take up from food over time.

FAQ
Common questions
What is methylcobalamin?
It is one of the two forms of vitamin B12 that human enzymes can use directly. The molecule is a cobalt ion inside a corrin ring, with a methyl group attached to the cobalt. Bacteria make it; plants and animals do not, which is why it reaches us through animal foods or supplements.
How does the body use it?
Methylcobalamin sits in the enzyme that moves a methyl group off folate and onto the making of methionine. Methionine becomes SAMe, the molecule the body draws on whenever it needs to add a methyl group to DNA, to a neurotransmitter, or to the fatty sheath wrapped around a nerve.
How is this different from a regular B12 supplement?
Most B12 supplements use cyanocobalamin, a stable form carrying a cyanide group that the body swaps out before use. This one supplies methylcobalamin, a coenzyme form, at 5,000 mcg per serving. Both end up in the same cobalamin pool; they simply start at different points.
Who is it for?
Adults on vegan, vegetarian or mostly plant-based diets, who have no dietary source of B12. Older adults, whose uptake from food changes with stomach acid. People who prefer methylated B vitamins, and anyone taking B12 on its own rather than inside a B-complex.
What should I know before taking it?
B12 is water-soluble and generally well tolerated. Talk with your healthcare provider before use, especially if you take metformin or acid-blocking medication, which can affect B12 status over time, or if you are on folate as well, since the two are assessed together.
