About this supplement

What Is Vitamin K2?

Vitamin K2 is not one molecule but a family, the menaquinones, named by the length of their tail. This is MK-7: a quinone ring with a seven-unit isoprenoid chain, grown by fermenting chickpea protein with the same bacterium that turns soybeans into natto.

How It Works in the Body

Vitamin K exists for one chemical edit. An enzyme in the cell uses it to add a carboxyl group to particular glutamate residues, giving those proteins a two-pronged claw that grips calcium. Three families depend on that edit. Osteocalcin, made by bone-building cells. Matrix Gla protein, made in the walls of arteries. And the clotting factors made in the liver. Vitamin K is then recycled and used again.

What It Supports

  • Bone: K2 activates osteocalcin, the calcium-binding protein that bone cells make.
  • Normal clotting: Vitamin K helps maintain normal blood clotting.
  • Arterial proteins: K2 is required to activate matrix Gla protein in artery walls.
  • Calcium handling: It supports the body's normal handling of calcium, working alongside vitamin D.

Who It May Suit

Adults building a bone routine around calcium and vitamin D. People who eat little natto or aged cheese, the main food sources of long-chain menaquinones. This MK-7 is grown on chickpea rather than soy, so it suits vegetarian and vegan diets.

Good To Know

The seven-isoprene tail makes MK-7 strongly fat-soluble and long-lived in circulation. Talk with your healthcare provider before use if you take warfarin or another vitamin K antagonist, since those medications work by interrupting vitamin K recycling and a steady vitamin K intake matters for them.

FAQ

Common questions

What is MK-7?

One member of the vitamin K2 family, menaquinone-7. It shares the quinone ring of all vitamin K and carries seven isoprene units as its tail. Bacteria make it, not plants: here it comes from fermenting chickpea protein, at 300 mcg per serving.

How does vitamin K work?

It serves a single enzyme, which uses vitamin K to attach carboxyl groups to certain proteins. Those carboxyl groups sit side by side and form a pocket that holds a calcium ion. Without the edit, the protein is made but cannot bind calcium and do its job.

How is K2 different from the K1 in vegetables?

K1, phylloquinone, comes from green leaves and is taken up mainly by the liver for clotting factors. Menaquinones come from bacteria and fermented foods, and MK-7's long tail keeps it in circulation for hours, so it reaches tissue outside the liver.

Who is it for?

Adults pairing vitamin K with calcium and vitamin D in a bone routine. People who rarely eat natto, aged cheese or other fermented foods. Vegetarians and vegans, since this menaquinone is grown on chickpea protein rather than taken from an animal source.

What should I know before taking it?

Talk with your healthcare provider before use if you take warfarin or another vitamin K antagonist. Those medications work by interrupting vitamin K recycling, so changing your vitamin K intake changes how they behave, and your provider may want to check your clotting time.
