What Is Cal-Mag?
Calcium and magnesium in a two-to-one ratio, each drawn from three different salts. The calcium comes from carbonate, citrate and ascorbate; the magnesium from oxide, citrate and ascorbate. There is 1,000 mg of calcium and 500 mg of magnesium per serving, and a serving is two tablets.
How It Works in the Body
Inside a muscle cell the two minerals pull against each other. Calcium floods in to set off a contraction, and magnesium sits at the channels that carry it, so the fiber can settle again. In bone they cooperate instead: calcium and phosphate build the hydroxyapatite crystal, and magnesium sits on its surface. The three salts behave differently on the way in. Carbonate needs stomach acid, citrate does not, and ascorbate arrives with ascorbic acid as its partner.
