About this supplement
What Is Sunflower Lecithin?
Lecithin is not one molecule. It is a mixture of phospholipids pressed out of a seed, and this one comes from sunflower seeds rather than soy. There is 2,400 mg of sunflower lecithin per serving, carrying 360 mg of phosphatidylcholine.
How It Works in the Body
Phospholipids are what cell membranes are made of: a water-loving head, two fatty tails, and a habit of lining up into sheets. Phosphatidylcholine is the commonest one in human membranes.
It is also the main dietary form of choline, an essential nutrient. The body spends choline on two jobs in particular — building acetylcholine, the messenger nerves use to speak to muscle, and packaging fat for the trip out of the liver.
What It Supports
- Cell membranes: Phosphatidylcholine is a structural part of every membrane you have, so it contributes to normal membrane structure.
- Choline supply: Phosphatidylcholine is the main dietary carrier of choline, so it helps maintain the body's choline pool.
- Nerve signaling: Choline is the raw material for acetylcholine, so it plays a role in normal nerve-to-muscle signaling.
- Fat handling in the liver: Phosphatidylcholine is needed to build the particles that carry fat out of the liver, so it supports normal fat transport.
Who It May Suit
A fit for people steering clear of soy who still want lecithin, and for anyone who eats few eggs and no liver, the two richest food sources of choline. The softgel shell is bovine gelatin, so it does not suit vegetarian eating.
Good To Know
Lecithin is an emulsifier, which is a molecule that lets oil and water mix, and that is why the same material turns up in chocolate and salad dressing. Talk with your healthcare provider before use if you are pregnant or nursing, or if you take medication that acts on the acetylcholine pathway.

FAQ
Common questions
What is sunflower lecithin?
A blend of phospholipids obtained from sunflower seeds, mainly phosphatidylcholine along with phosphatidylethanolamine and phosphatidylinositol. Lecithin as a category is a food ingredient long before it is a supplement, and sunflower is the usual choice when a soy-free source is wanted.
How does it work in the body?
Phospholipids are membrane material. Each one has a head that likes water and two tails that do not, so they arrange themselves into the double-layered sheet every cell is wrapped in. Phosphatidylcholine also delivers choline, which the body turns into acetylcholine and into more membrane phospholipid.
What makes this form different?
The source and the carrier. It is sunflower rather than soy, which matters to anyone avoiding soy, and it carries 2,400 mg of lecithin per serving, of which 360 mg is phosphatidylcholine. The softgel is filled with organic extra virgin olive oil.
Who is it for?
Adults avoiding soy, and people whose eating includes little of the food choline usually comes from, which is eggs, liver and meat. Note the softgel shell is bovine gelatin, so this one does not fit vegetarian or vegan eating, or a kosher or halal pattern.
What should I know before taking it?
Talk with your healthcare provider before use if you are pregnant or nursing, since choline needs shift then, or if you take a medication acting on the acetylcholine pathway, such as one for myasthenia gravis. Large amounts of lecithin can also leave a fishy odor on the skin.
