About this supplement

What Is Quercetin + Bromelain?

Quercetin is a flavonol, one of the yellow plant pigments behind onion skins, capers and apple peel. This one is drawn from the flower buds of Sophora japonica, the Japanese pagoda tree, which are unusually rich in it. Bromelain is something else entirely: a set of protein-cutting enzymes from the pineapple stem.

How It Works in the Body

Quercetin works as an antioxidant. Its ring system can hand an electron to a free radical and stay stable afterwards, which is what makes flavonols useful to the plants that build them. It also interacts with mast cells, the immune cells stationed in skin and mucous membranes that release histamine, a normal signaling molecule with jobs in immunity, stomach acid and the brain. Bromelain is a cysteine protease: it cuts proteins at particular points, and a share of it crosses the gut wall intact.

What It Supports

  • Normal immune signaling: Supports the everyday histamine signaling that is part of normal immune activity.
  • Antioxidant activity: Supports the body's own defenses against free radicals.
  • A healthy inflammatory response: Supports the normal signaling that both starts and settles that response.
  • Protein digestion: Bromelain cuts proteins the way the enzymes of the pancreas do.

Who It May Suit

People building a routine around plant polyphenols, and anyone who would rather take the two together than as separate capsules. The capsule shell is plant cellulose, so it fits vegan and vegetarian eating.

Good To Know

Quercetin sits at 880 mg and bromelain at 165 mg per serving, a pairing formulators have used for decades. Talk with your healthcare provider before use, especially if you take a blood thinner, since bromelain can affect how readily blood clots, or if you have a pineapple or latex allergy.

FAQ

Common questions

What is quercetin, and what is bromelain?

Quercetin is a flavonol pigment found across the plant kingdom: onions, capers, apples, tea. Here it comes from pagoda tree flower buds as quercetin dihydrate, meaning two water molecules sit in the crystal. Bromelain is no pigment at all but a mixture of enzymes pressed from pineapple stems.

How does it work?

Quercetin donates electrons to free radicals and stays stable, and it interacts with mast cells, which release histamine as part of ordinary immune signaling. Bromelain is a protease: it snips proteins into fragments. Some of it survives the gut intact, which is why it is taken as a supplement at all.

What makes this combination different?

Two ingredients from unrelated sources, at 880 mg of quercetin and 165 mg of bromelain per serving. Quercetin on its own dissolves poorly in water, and formulators have long paired it with bromelain for that reason. The rest of the capsule is cellulose, magnesium stearate and silica.

Who is it for?

People who eat for polyphenols, the onion and apple and green tea crowd, and who want a concentrated source alongside the food. It fits vegan and vegetarian eating, since both ingredients are plant-derived and the capsule is cellulose. Anyone avoiding pineapple should skip it.

What should I know before taking it?

Talk with your healthcare provider before use if you take a blood thinner, an antibiotic, or a medication with a narrow safety margin, because quercetin can change how the liver clears some drugs and bromelain can act on clotting. Mention a pineapple or latex allergy, and raise it if you are pregnant or nursing.
