About this supplement
What Is Vitamin A?
Vitamin A is a family of fat-soluble molecules built on the retinol skeleton. This softgel supplies the preformed, animal-source kind: retinyl palmitate together with fish liver oil, suspended in organic extra virgin olive oil, at 3,000 mcg per serving.
How It Works in the Body
Retinyl palmitate is retinol with a fatty acid attached, which makes it a stable way to carry the vitamin. In the small intestine that fatty acid is cleaved off, the retinol is taken up, and most of it ends up held in the liver.
From there it is converted as needed. One route makes retinal, the light-sensitive molecule that pairs with opsin in the rod cells of the retina. Another makes retinoic acid, which switches genes on and off as cells mature.
What It Supports
- Vision: Retinal is the molecule that starts the visual signal, and vitamin A supports normal vision.
- Skin and linings: Retinoic acid acts on the epithelial tissue lining the airways and gut, and supports skin.
- Immune function: Vitamin A supports normal immune function.
- Cell maturation: Vitamin A plays a role in how cells specialize as they develop.
Who It May Suit
This suits people who eat little liver, dairy or oily fish, the foods that carry preformed vitamin A. It also suits anyone who would rather not depend on converting beta-carotene from plants, a conversion that varies widely between individuals. It contains fish and bovine gelatin.
Good To Know
Preformed vitamin A accumulates: the body holds it in the liver rather than clearing what it does not need. Talk with your provider before use if you are pregnant or planning a pregnancy, since high intakes of preformed vitamin A are a recognized risk to a developing baby, and also if you take a retinoid medication or have liver disease.

FAQ
Common questions
What is vitamin A?
A fat-soluble vitamin that exists as retinol and the molecules the body makes from it. This softgel provides the preformed kind, retinyl palmitate plus fish liver oil, at 3,000 mcg per serving. Plant foods provide a different starting material, beta-carotene, which the body has to convert first.
How does it work in the body?
The palmitate is cleaved off in the gut and the retinol is absorbed with fat, then stockpiled in the liver in specialized cells. As tissues call for it, retinol is released and converted, either to retinal for the visual cycle in the retina or to retinoic acid, which binds receptors that regulate gene activity.
What makes this formula different?
It is a single-nutrient vitamin A softgel rather than a whole marine oil, so it carries no meaningful omega-3 fats. The vitamin is retinyl palmitate, a stable retinol ester, alongside fish liver oil, and the base is organic extra virgin olive oil.
Who is it for?
It suits people who eat little liver, dairy, eggs or oily fish. It also suits people who would rather have preformed vitamin A than rely on converting beta-carotene, which some people do slowly. It is not vegetarian or vegan: it contains fish and the shell is bovine gelatin.
What should I know before taking it?
Preformed vitamin A is stored rather than flushed, so intakes from several supplements add up. Talk with your provider before use if you are pregnant or may become pregnant, because high preformed vitamin A intake is a recognized risk to a developing baby, or if you take a retinoid medication or have liver disease.
