About this supplement

What Is L-Lysine?

Lysine is one of the nine amino acids the human body cannot build for itself, so every molecule of it has to come from food. It is also the amino acid that runs short first in wheat, rice and corn, which is why grain-heavy diets are called lysine-limited.

How It Works in the Body

Lysine earns its keep in two places. In collagen, lysine side chains are hydroxylated and then bonded to one another, forming the covalent bridges that give skin, tendon and bone their tensile strength. Separately, the body uses lysine as the starting material for carnitine, the carrier that walks long-chain fatty acids into mitochondria to be burned for fuel.

What It Supports

  • Collagen structure: Supports the crosslinks that hold mature collagen fibers together.
  • Normal wound healing: Supports the collagen-building side of normal wound healing.
  • Carnitine synthesis: Supports the body's own production of carnitine from scratch.
  • Calcium uptake: Contributes to how much dietary calcium the gut takes up.

Who It May Suit

Plant-forward eaters, especially anyone whose protein comes mainly from grains and nuts rather than legumes, dairy or meat. Athletes with high protein turnover often take an interest too. The tablet is vegetarian: the stearic acid and magnesium stearate in it are both from vegetable sources.

Good To Know

The lysine is supplied as lysine hydrochloride, the salt form used to press it into a tablet. Lysine and arginine share a transporter in the gut, so they are taken up by the same route. Talk with your healthcare provider before use, especially if you have kidney disease or take a calcium supplement.

FAQ

Common questions

What is L-lysine?

It is an essential amino acid, which means your body has no pathway to make it and every molecule you carry came from protein you ate. Meat, fish, eggs, dairy and legumes are rich in it. Grains are not. It is a building block in nearly every protein you have.

How does it work?

Two jobs stand out. Inside collagen fibers, lysine residues are modified and then bonded across strands, which turns loose collagen into a strong fabric. In the liver and kidney, lysine is also the raw material for carnitine, the molecule that ferries fatty acids into mitochondria to be burned.

What makes this form different?

It is L-lysine hydrochloride pressed into a tablet. A serving carries 1,000 mg of lysine, supplied by 1,270 mg of L-lysine hydrochloride per serving, because the salt weighs more than the amino acid inside it. Nothing else in the tablet is active.

Who is it for?

People eating mostly plants, particularly grain-based patterns where lysine is the amino acid in shortest supply. It works for vegetarians, since the stearic acid and magnesium stearate come from vegetable sources. Anyone carrying a heavy training load and a high protein turnover may find it relevant too.

What should I know before taking it?

Talk with your healthcare provider before use, especially if you have kidney disease, since the kidneys clear surplus amino acids. Mention it too if you take a calcium supplement or a gentamicin-type antibiotic. Lysine changes how much calcium the gut absorbs, and there are reports of added kidney strain with those antibiotics.
