What Is NMN?

NMN is short for nicotinamide mononucleotide, and the name is a parts list. Nicotinamide is the amide form of vitamin B3; a mononucleotide is that base joined to a ribose sugar carrying one phosphate. The result is a nucleotide, a structural cousin of the units RNA is built from.

How It Works in the Body

Cells rarely build NAD from scratch. They recycle it, and NMN is the intermediate in that loop. An enzyme called NAMPT joins nicotinamide to an activated ribose phosphate to make NMN, and a second enzyme, NMNAT, caps NMN with an adenine nucleotide. What comes out is NAD.

From there NAD does the work. In its oxidized form it collects a hydride from fuel molecules in glycolysis and the citric acid cycle; as NADH it hands that cargo to the mitochondrial chain. Other enzymes spend NAD outright, among them the ones that carry out DNA repair.
