About this supplement

What Is Green Tea Extract?

Green tea and black tea come off the same plant, Camellia sinensis. The difference is what happens in the hours after picking: green tea leaves are steamed or pan-fired quickly, which keeps their catechins intact instead of letting them brown. This supplement concentrates those catechins, with a decaffeinated portion alongside.

How It Works in the Body

Catechins are polyphenols: flat, multi-ringed molecules studded with hydroxyl groups. The main one in green tea is epigallocatechin gallate, shortened to EGCG. Groups like those give up an electron easily, which is the whole of antioxidant chemistry. Settle a reactive molecule, and it does not take an electron from something the cell needs.

Catechins also associate with the lipids and proteins of cell membranes, so they act at the surfaces where oxidative damage tends to begin.

What It Supports

  • Antioxidant defense: EGCG and the other catechins support the body's antioxidant defenses.
  • Cardiovascular health: Tea polyphenols support normal cardiovascular function.
  • Cell membranes: Catechins sit among membrane lipids, which is where oxidative damage often begins.
  • Caffeine content: The standardized portion carries up to 4 mg of naturally occurring caffeine per serving, and the rest is decaffeinated.

Who It May Suit

People who like green tea but would rather not drink cup after cup to get its catechins, and anyone who wants those compounds with very little caffeine attached. The capsule is plant-based. Catechins are what make strong green tea taste astringent; in a capsule that is not an issue.

Good To Know

The extract is standardized, so one serving carries the same catechin content as the next. Talk with your healthcare provider before use, especially if you have a liver condition or take a medication that is hard on the liver. Concentrated green tea catechins carry a rare but recognized signal for liver injury, and it shows up more often when they are swallowed on an empty stomach.

FAQ

Common questions

What is green tea extract?

A concentrated preparation from the leaves of Camellia sinensis, the tea plant. Green tea is made by heating the leaves soon after picking, which stops them browning and keeps the catechins in place. The extract isolates those catechins, the group of polyphenols green tea is known for.

How do green tea catechins work?

They are polyphenols, and polyphenols hand off electrons readily. That lets them settle reactive molecules before those molecules pull an electron out of a lipid or a protein. EGCG, the main catechin here, also associates with cell membranes, so it acts at the boundary and not only in the bloodstream.

What is in a serving?

400 mg of standardized green tea extract, of which 200 mg is EGCG, plus 50 mg of decaffeinated green tea leaf per serving. The standardized portion brings up to 4 mg of naturally occurring caffeine per serving, a small fraction of what a brewed cup carries.

Who is it for?

People who want the catechins in green tea without brewing several cups, and anyone who steers clear of caffeine, since there is very little of it here. The capsule is plant-based, so vegetarian and vegan eating are covered. There is nothing else in the formula.

What should I know before taking it?

Talk with your healthcare provider before use if you have a liver condition, take a medication processed by the liver, or are pregnant or breastfeeding. Concentrated green tea catechins have a rare but recognized association with liver injury, and the reports cluster around use on an empty stomach rather than with food.
