About this supplement

What Is Zinc Balance Complex?

Zinc Balance Complex is a five-part capsule built around zinc bisglycinate — zinc bound to two molecules of the amino acid glycine. Riboflavin, vitamin B6 as pyridoxal-5-phosphate, molybdenum glycinate and malic acid fill out the rest. The capsule is cellulose.

How It Works in the Body

Every active here is an enzyme part. Zinc is a catalytic or structural cofactor in hundreds of human enzymes, including copper-zinc superoxide dismutase. Riboflavin becomes FAD. Glutathione reductase and thioredoxin reductase both carry FAD, and both put their partner molecules back into the reduced form. Vitamin B6 arrives already as pyridoxal-5-phosphate, the coenzyme shape the body uses for amino acid chemistry. Molybdenum sits in the molybdenum cofactor at the heart of sulfite oxidase, which turns sulfite into sulfate. Malic acid is malate, one step of the citric acid cycle.

What It Supports

  • Immune function: Zinc supports normal immune function and is found in the enzymes and transcription factors immune cells rely on.
  • Antioxidant enzymes: Riboflavin supports the body's own antioxidant enzymes, which cannot work without FAD.
  • Amino acid metabolism: Pyridoxal-5-phosphate is the coenzyme for transaminases, the enzymes that move nitrogen between amino acids.
  • Sulfur chemistry: Molybdenum is required for sulfite oxidase, the enzyme that converts sulfite to sulfate.
  • Energy metabolism: Malic acid plays a role in normal energy metabolism.

Who It May Suit

The capsule is cellulose and the other ingredients are mineral or plant, so it suits vegans and vegetarians. It also suits people eating mostly plants, where zinc comes bound up with phytates. Anyone who would rather have five targeted nutrients than a broad multivitamin will recognize the format.

Good To Know

Zinc bisglycinate and molybdenum glycinate are chelates: the mineral is wrapped in glycine before it ever reaches you. Zinc and copper share an uptake route, so talk with your healthcare provider before use, especially if you take antibiotics or are pregnant.

FAQ

Common questions

What is Zinc Balance Complex?

A five-ingredient capsule from Designs for Health. Zinc is the headline at 30 mg per serving, as bisglycinate. Riding with it are riboflavin, vitamin B6 in its pyridoxal-5-phosphate form, molybdenum as a glycinate chelate, and malic acid. The idea is zinc plus the cofactors that work alongside it.

How do the ingredients work together?

They meet in enzymes. Zinc and molybdenum are metal centers that sit inside specific enzymes and make the chemistry happen. Riboflavin and B6 become coenzymes — FAD and pyridoxal-5-phosphate — that other enzymes borrow to carry electrons or shuffle nitrogen. Malate is a metabolic intermediate rather than a cofactor.

What makes this formula different from a plain zinc capsule?

A plain zinc capsule is one mineral. This one pairs zinc bisglycinate chelate with the nutrients that sit next to it in enzyme chemistry. A serving carries 30 mg per serving of zinc, 2.8 mg per serving of riboflavin, 5.2 mg per serving of vitamin B6, 50 mcg per serving of molybdenum and 200 mg per serving of malic acid.

Who is it for?

People who want zinc with company rather than zinc alone, and people eating mostly plants, where phytates in grains and legumes bind part of the zinc in a meal. The capsule is cellulose and nothing in it comes from an animal, so vegans and vegetarians are fine.

What should I know before taking it?

Zinc competes with copper for the same uptake protein, so a high zinc intake carried for a long time can leave copper short. Zinc also binds tetracycline and quinolone antibiotics in the gut. And riboflavin turns urine bright yellow, which is harmless. Talk with your healthcare provider before use.
