What Is Vitamin D3 With MK-7?
Vitamin D3 is the form of vitamin D that skin makes in sunlight, and it is scarce in food. MK-7 is a form of vitamin K2, built by bacteria during fermentation; natto, the Japanese fermented soybean, is its richest food source. There is 125 mcg of D3 and 100 mcg of MK-7 per serving.
How It Works in the Body
The two vitamins handle different halves of the same job. D3 is converted in the liver and kidney into the active form, which tells the intestine to build calcium-carrying proteins. Vitamin K2 is the cofactor an enzyme needs to add carboxyl groups to a small set of proteins: osteocalcin in bone, matrix Gla protein in blood vessel walls. Carboxylated, those proteins bind calcium. Uncarboxylated, they cannot.
