About this supplement

What Is Astragalus?

Astragalus membranaceus is a perennial in the pea family, with feathery leaves and a long, straw-yellow taproot. The root is dug after several years and sliced lengthwize into strips that look like tongue depressors. It tastes sweet rather than bitter.

How It Works in the Body

Astragalus is a tonic herb rather than a nutrient, so the root itself is the useful thing to describe. Three compound groups define it: polysaccharides, triterpene saponins called astragalosides, and isoflavones such as calycosin and formononetin. This extract is standardized for the polysaccharide fraction.

Chinese herbal medicine calls the root huang qi and files it among the qi tonics — herbs taken steadily over weeks rather than at the first sign of trouble. In northern China it is still simmered into everyday soups.

What It Supports

  • Normal immune function: Huang qi is the immune tonic of Chinese herbal practice, taken to support normal immune function.
  • Everyday stamina: Its traditional role is a tonic taken through the working seasons, to support everyday stamina.
  • The cold months: Households in northern China have long cooked the sliced root into winter broths.
  • Plant saponins and isoflavones: Astragalosides and calycosin belong to compound families found across the pea family.

Who It May Suit

It suits people who want a steady, traditional botanical rather than a quick-acting one, and anyone whose routine leans herbal rather than nutritional. The capsule is plant cellulose, so it fits vegetarian and vegan eating.

Good To Know

The sliced root is sweet enough to chew, and the extract keeps some of that character. Talk with your healthcare provider before use if you take an immunosuppressant after a transplant or for an autoimmune condition, since astragalus is traditionally used to stir immune activity, and if you are pregnant or nursing.

FAQ

Common questions

What is astragalus?

A perennial legume of northern China, Mongolia and Korea, sometimes called Mongolian milkvetch. The part used is the root, harvested after a few years of growth and dried in long pale strips. Its Chinese name, huang qi, means yellow leader, for the root's color and its standing among tonic herbs.

How is it used?

As a tonic taken over long stretches. Chinese practice simmers the root in soups and long decoctions, often right through autumn and winter, and takes it steadily rather than occasionally. A capsule of standardized extract is the modern shorthand for that.

What makes this extract different?

It is a concentrated root extract standardized for polysaccharides, the large sugar molecules that make up much of the root's weight, at 500 mg per serving. Powdered whole root and saponin-standardized extracts are the other common forms, and they carry a different balance of compounds.

Who is it for?

Adults who want a long-standing herbal tonic in their routine and prefer something taken steadily rather than as needed. It sits alongside other botanicals rather than replacing a nutrient. The capsule is plant cellulose and the filler is cassava maltodextrin, so vegetarian and vegan eating is covered.

What should I know before taking it?

Talk with your healthcare provider before use if you take an immunosuppressant, including after a transplant, because astragalus is traditionally used to stir immune activity and may work against those drugs. Mention it too if you live with an autoimmune condition, or if you are pregnant or nursing.
