About this supplement

What Is Vitamin E Tocotrienols?

The vitamin E family has two halves. Tocopherols are the half most supplements supply. Tocotrienols are the other, found in annatto, palm fruit and rice bran. This softgel is tocotrienols only, mostly delta with some gamma, at 125 mg per serving, and no alpha-tocopherol at all.

How It Works in the Body

Both halves share the same working end: a chromanol ring that donates a hydrogen atom to a lipid radical and stops oxidation spreading through a membrane. The tails are what differ. A tocopherol's tail is saturated and stiff. A tocotrienol's carries three double bonds, a shorter kinked tail that moves more freely among membrane fats.

The liver's transfer protein, though, binds alpha-tocopherol first and passes tocotrienols on less readily. That is why alpha-tocopherol is left out here: the two forms compete for the same handling.

What It Supports

  • Cholesterol: Supports cholesterol levels already within the normal range.
  • Antioxidant activity: Delta and gamma tocotrienols act as antioxidants in fat-rich tissue.
  • Cardiovascular health: Supports cardiovascular health through the vitamin E family's role in protecting circulating lipids from oxidation.
  • Cell membranes: Tocotrienols sit among membrane fats and support their protection from oxidation.
  • Vitamin E status: Contributes to total vitamin E intake from a source most diets supply sparingly.

Who It May Suit

Tocotrienols are scarce in most diets, so this may suit someone who wants that side of the vitamin E family specifically. It is a single-ingredient product, which suits people who keep their nutrients separate. The softgel shell is gelatin, so it is not vegetarian.

Good To Know

Delta and gamma are the two forms this blend concentrates; alpha and beta tocotrienol are absent by design, as are the tocopherols. Like the rest of the vitamin E family, tocotrienols affect platelet activity at higher intakes, so talk with your provider before use if you take a blood thinner or have surgery scheduled.

FAQ

Common questions

What is Vitamin E Tocotrienols?

One of the two branches of the vitamin E family. This softgel supplies a tocotrienol blend, mostly delta with some gamma, at 125 mg per serving, with no tocopherols added. Tocotrienols occur naturally in annatto, palm fruit and rice bran, and most diets supply very little of them.

How does it work?

Like every vitamin E compound, a tocotrienol ends a lipid oxidation chain by donating a hydrogen atom from its chromanol ring. The difference is the tail: three double bonds make it shorter and kinked, so the molecule moves more freely among the fats of a cell membrane than a tocopherol does.

What makes this formula different from a vitamin E softgel?

It is alpha-tocopherol free, on purpose. Alpha-tocopherol is the form the liver's transfer protein binds first, and it competes with tocotrienols for that handling, so this blend concentrates delta and gamma tocotrienols and leaves the tocopherol side of the family out entirely.

Who is it for?

People who want the tocotrienol half of vitamin E rather than a standard tocopherol supplement, and who are comfortable with a gelatin softgel, since it is not vegetarian. Being a single-ingredient product, it also suits anyone assembling their own regimen piece by piece.

What should I know before taking it?

Talk with your provider before use if you take a blood thinner or an antiplatelet medicine, or ahead of any planned surgery, because vitamin E compounds affect platelet activity. Mention a separate tocopherol supplement too, since the two forms compete for the same carrier protein.
