About this supplement

What Is Ubiquinol GG Complex?

Ubiquinol is coenzyme Q10 in its reduced form, carrying two more hydrogens on the ring than ubiquinone does. GG is geranylgeraniol, a twenty-carbon isoprenoid alcohol pressed from annatto seed, the same seed that colors cheddar orange.

How It Works in the Body

Coenzyme Q10 has two halves. A quinone ring takes electrons and gives them up again, and a long isoprenoid tail anchors the molecule in the fatty middle of a membrane. The body builds that tail from isoprene units made in the mevalonate pathway.

Geranylgeraniol comes from the same pathway, four isoprene units long. Cells also attach geranylgeranyl groups to certain proteins, which is how those proteins are held against the membrane where they work.

What It Supports

  • Energy metabolism: Coenzyme Q10 carries electrons along the mitochondrial transport chain, so it plays a role in normal energy metabolism.
  • Membrane lipids: In the reduced form, coenzyme Q10 hands a hydrogen atom to a lipid radical and helps maintain membrane fats against oxidation.
  • Isoprenoid supply: Geranylgeraniol is an isoprenoid from the mevalonate pathway, the same route the body uses to build coenzyme Q10's tail.
  • Protein anchoring: Cells attach geranylgeranyl groups to certain proteins to hold them at the membrane.

Who It May Suit

Adults already familiar with coenzyme Q10 who want the isoprenoid side of the story in the same softgel. A serving is one softgel. The shell is bovine gelatin, so it suits neither vegetarian nor vegan eating.

Good To Know

Ubiquinol is oil-based and reacts with air, so it is held in medium-chain triglycerides with quillaja extract and ascorbyl palmitate beside it. The formula carries 100 mg of ubiquinol and 60 mg of trans-geranylgeraniol per serving. Talk with your healthcare provider before use if you take warfarin or another blood thinner, since coenzyme Q10 shares a quinone structure with vitamin K, and mention it if you take a statin.

FAQ

Common questions

What is it?

A softgel pairing ubiquinol, the reduced form of coenzyme Q10, with trans-geranylgeraniol from annatto seed. Ubiquinol carries two more hydrogens on its ring than ubiquinone does. Geranylgeraniol, usually shortened to GG, is a twenty-carbon isoprenoid alcohol that the body also makes for itself.

How does it work?

Coenzyme Q10 shuttles electrons along the mitochondrial transport chain and, in its reduced form, quenches lipid radicals inside membranes. Geranylgeraniol comes from the mevalonate pathway, the isoprenoid route the body also uses to build coenzyme Q10's long tail, and cells attach geranylgeranyl groups to certain proteins to hold them at the membrane.

What makes this formula different?

Two molecules from one pathway. There is 100 mg of ubiquinol and 60 mg of trans-geranylgeraniol per serving, so the formula carries the finished molecule and an isoprenoid from further up the same pathway. The ubiquinol is held in medium-chain triglycerides with quillaja extract.

Who is it for?

Adults who already know coenzyme Q10 and want the GG side of the picture in the same softgel, and anyone who prefers a single-softgel serving. The shell is bovine gelatin, so it suits neither vegetarian nor vegan eating, and anyone avoiding beef-derived ingredients should look elsewhere.

What should I know before taking it?

Talk with your healthcare provider before use if you take warfarin or another blood thinner, since coenzyme Q10 shares a quinone structure with vitamin K and can change how that medicine behaves. Mention it too if you take a statin or blood pressure medication, and if you are pregnant or nursing.
