About this supplement
What Is Ubiquinol?
Ubiquinol is coenzyme Q10 carrying two more electrons and two more hydrogens: the reduced form of the same molecule. Where ubiquinone has a quinone ring, ubiquinol has a hydroquinone ring with two hydroxyl groups. This one is Kaneka Ubiquinol, produced by yeast fermentation.
How It Works in the Body
Coenzyme Q10 exists in two states and the body moves it between them constantly. That oxidation-reduction cycling is the point of the molecule. In mitochondria it carries electrons along the transport chain. Outside them, in cell membranes and in the lipoproteins circulating in blood, the reduced form does something else. It gives up a hydrogen atom to a lipid radical, halting a chain of lipid oxidation before it spreads. It can also pass reducing equivalents to vitamin E, returning it to its working form.
What It Supports
- Antioxidant defense: In the reduced form, coenzyme Q10 is one of the antioxidants the body makes itself.
- Energy metabolism: Coenzyme Q10 plays a role in normal energy metabolism as the electron carrier of the mitochondrial chain.
- Membrane lipids: Ubiquinol helps maintain the fats in cell membranes against oxidation.
- Vitamin E: Ubiquinol passes reducing equivalents to vitamin E, returning it to its working form.
Who It May Suit
Adults who would rather take the reduced form directly, and anyone whose own output has slowed with age. Being oil-based, it is absorbed along with dietary fat. The softgel uses bovine gelatin, so it is not suitable for vegetarian or vegan eating.
Good To Know
Ubiquinol reacts with air, which is why it is held in MCT oil inside an opaque softgel. There is 100 mg of ubiquinol per serving. Talk with your healthcare provider before use if you take warfarin or another blood thinner, since coenzyme Q10 shares a quinone structure with vitamin K, and mention it if you take a statin.

FAQ
Common questions
What is ubiquinol?
Ubiquinol is coenzyme Q10 in its reduced form, the same molecule carrying two more electrons and two more hydrogens. Chemically its ring is a hydroquinone rather than a quinone. This one is Kaneka Ubiquinol, produced by yeast fermentation rather than by chemical synthesis.
How does ubiquinol work in the body?
Coenzyme Q10 shuttles between two states. In mitochondria it carries electrons along the transport chain. In membranes and lipoproteins the reduced form works as an antioxidant: it donates a hydrogen atom to a lipid radical, halting a chain of lipid oxidation, then passes reducing equivalents to vitamin E.
What makes the ubiquinol form different?
It arrives in the reduced form. Ubiquinone has to pick up electrons before it can act as an antioxidant, whereas ubiquinol starts there; the body interconverts the two either way. Kaneka Ubiquinol is held in MCT oil inside an opaque softgel because the reduced form reacts with air.
Who is it for?
Adults who would rather take the reduced form directly, and anyone whose own output has slowed with age. Because it is oil-based, it is absorbed along with dietary fat. The softgel uses bovine gelatin, so it does not suit vegetarian or vegan eating.
What should I know before taking it?
Coenzyme Q10 shares a quinone structure with vitamin K, so talk with your healthcare provider before use if you take warfarin or another blood thinner. Mention it as well if you take a statin or blood pressure medication, and if you are pregnant or nursing, since there is little information on use then.
