About this supplement

What Is Nettle Root?

Stinging nettle grows in damp, disturbed ground across Europe and North America, and most people meet it the hard way. The sting comes from hollow hairs on the leaves and stems. This is the root, which has no hairs and a different chemistry entirely.

How It Works in the Body

The root's constituents fall into four groups: lignans such as secoisolariciresinol and pinoresinol, plant sterols led by beta-sitosterol, polysaccharides, and a set of lectins known collectively as UDA.

Leaf and root are not interchangeable. The leaf is a mineral-rich green with flavonoids and its own long history in cooking and tea. The root carries none of those flavonoid glycosides and is used differently.

What It Supports

  • A men's herbal tradition: European herbal practice reserves the root, not the leaf, for men, and it is still taken as a men's tonic.
  • Plant lignans: Secoisolariciresinol is the same class of compound found in flaxseed and sesame.
  • Plant sterols: Beta-sitosterol is the plant counterpart of the sterols in our own cell membranes.
  • Scopoletin: The root's coumarin glows pale blue under a lamp, which is one way the material is identified.

Who It May Suit

It suits men who want a traditional European botanical in their routine, and anyone who prefers a single-herb extract to a blend. The capsule is plant cellulose, so vegetarian and vegan eating is covered.

Good To Know

Root extract has none of the sting; that belongs to the fresh leaf and stem. Talk with your healthcare provider before use if you take a diuretic or medication for blood pressure, since nettle has a traditional reputation as a mild diuretic, and if you are pregnant or nursing. Mention a known nettle allergy too.

FAQ

Common questions

What is nettle root?

The underground part of Urtica dioica, the stinging nettle that grows along hedgerows and stream banks. The roots are pale, fibrous and creeping, and they are dug rather than cut. Unlike the leaf, the root has no stinging hairs, and it has its own distinct chemistry.

How is it used?

As a traditional material, prepared as a decoction or a tincture. European practice has used the dried root as a men's tonic for generations, and the herbal monographs list it as a material separate from nettle leaf. Its documented constituents are lignans, plant sterols, polysaccharides, lectins and scopoletin.

What makes this form different?

It is a concentrated root extract at 500 mg per serving across two capsules, not the leaf and not a whole-root powder. Nettle leaf products are far more common, and they carry flavonoids and minerals that the root does not have at all.

Who is it for?

Adults, particularly men, who want a single traditional European herb rather than a men's blend. Anyone who already uses nettle leaf and wants the other half of the plant will recognize it. The capsule is plant cellulose and the filler is rice flour, so it suits vegetarian and vegan eating.

What should I know before taking it?

Talk with your healthcare provider before use if you take a diuretic or medication for blood pressure, since nettle is traditionally regarded as a mild diuretic and the two can add up. Mention a known nettle allergy, and do not use it during pregnancy or nursing.
