About this supplement

What Is Magnesium Glycinate?

Magnesium glycinate is magnesium bound to two molecules of glycine, the smallest amino acid. Chemists call that arrangement a chelate. The mineral here is the Albion bisglycinate form, at 200 mg of elemental magnesium per serving, pressed into a tablet with a plant-based coating.

How It Works in the Body

Magnesium is a cofactor in hundreds of enzyme reactions. Most of them spend ATP, the molecule cells use as currency, and ATP only works with a magnesium ion attached. Magnesium also sits opposite calcium at nerve and muscle membranes: calcium drives contraction, and magnesium takes part in the release that follows.

The glycine is not filler. It is taken up by amino acid routes in the small intestine, and the magnesium travels with it.

What It Supports

  • Muscle and nerve function: Magnesium is required for normal muscle contraction and for the signals nerves send.
  • Energy metabolism: Every reaction that spends ATP needs magnesium alongside it, so magnesium plays a role in normal energy metabolism.
  • Bone structure: More than half the body's magnesium is held in bone, built into the mineral lattice.
  • Calm and rest: Magnesium supports a calm, balanced mood and restful sleep.

Who It May Suit

Magnesium is found in leafy greens, beans, nuts, seeds and whole grains. Diets built mainly on refined grains tend to run lower in it. The tablet and its coating are plant-based, so it fits vegetarian and vegan eating.

Good To Know

Glycinate is a chelated form: the mineral arrives bound to an amino acid rather than as a loose salt. Talk with your healthcare provider before use, especially if you have kidney disease or take an antibiotic such as doxycycline or ciprofloxacin. Kidneys are what clear magnesium from the blood, and magnesium binds those antibiotics in the gut.

FAQ

Common questions

What is magnesium glycinate?

It is a chelate: one magnesium ion held between two molecules of glycine, an amino acid. Magnesium is an essential mineral, meaning the body cannot make it and has to get it from food. Glycine is the smallest of the twenty amino acids the body builds proteins from.

How does magnesium work in the body?

It acts as a cofactor, a helper the enzyme needs in place before it can run. Magnesium partners with ATP in every reaction that spends cellular energy, and it holds a share of the body's structural mineral in bone. At nerve and muscle membranes it works opposite calcium during contraction and release.

What makes this form different from other magnesium?

Magnesium comes in salts such as oxide, citrate and chloride, where the mineral is paired with a simple ion. This one is chelated: magnesium held by two glycine molecules, an Albion bisglycinate. That gives 200 mg of elemental magnesium per serving in a tablet, with glycine as the carrier rather than a mineral salt.

Who is it for?

Anyone whose eating pattern leaves magnesium short: diets heavy on refined grains, or light on greens, beans, nuts and seeds. It fits vegetarian and vegan eating, since both the tablet and its coating are plant-based. Athletes and heavy sweaters lose magnesium in sweat, so it suits them too.

What should I know before taking it?

Talk with your healthcare provider before use, especially if you have kidney disease, since the kidneys are what clear magnesium from the blood. Magnesium can also bind tetracycline and quinolone antibiotics, and bisphosphonates taken for bone, making them harder to absorb. Loose stools are the usual sign of too much magnesium.
