About this supplement

What Is Inositol Advanced + ALA?

Inositol is a six-carbon sugar alcohol: a ring with a hydroxyl group on every corner. It comes in nine shapes, and two of them are here. Myo-inositol is the everyday form; D-chiro-inositol is a rarer one the body makes from it. Alpha lipoic acid sits beside them.

How It Works in the Body

Cells attach myo-inositol to a membrane lipid and hang phosphate groups off the ring. When a signal reaches the cell surface, an enzyme clips that lipid and releases second messengers that carry the message inward. An epimerase turns some myo-inositol into the D-chiro form.

Alpha lipoic acid works elsewhere. Bonded to a lysine on the enzyme complexes it serves, it swings between a closed sulfur ring and an open pair of thiols.

What It Supports

  • Cell signaling: Myo-inositol is the backbone of the phosphoinositide messenger system, so it plays a role in how cells read signals.
  • Two forms, one capsule: D-chiro-inositol is made from myo-inositol by an epimerase, and this capsule carries both.
  • Carbohydrate handling: Alpha lipoic acid supports glucose metabolism already in the normal range, serving the step where carbohydrate fuel enters the mitochondria.
  • Energy metabolism: Pyruvate dehydrogenase cannot run without its lipoamide arm, so alpha lipoic acid plays a role in normal energy metabolism.

Who It May Suit

Dietary inositol comes mostly from beans, whole grains, citrus and organ meats, so low-carbohydrate and low-fruit patterns take in less. This suits people who want both forms together rather than plain myo-inositol. The capsule is cellulose.

Good To Know

The alpha lipoic acid here is the usual mix of R and S forms. There is 1.6 g of inositol, as myo and D-chiro, with 100 mg of alpha lipoic acid per serving. Talk with your healthcare provider before use if you are pregnant or nursing, if you take medication for diabetes or thyroid hormone, or if you take lithium, since inositol sits inside the signaling lithium acts on.

FAQ

Common questions

What is it?

A capsule pairing two forms of inositol with alpha lipoic acid. Inositol is a six-carbon sugar alcohol; myo-inositol is the common form and D-chiro-inositol is one the body makes from it. Alpha lipoic acid is a small sulfur-containing fatty acid that your own mitochondria also build.

How does it work?

Cells build myo-inositol into a membrane lipid, then clip pieces off it to make second messengers, the small molecules that carry a signal from the cell surface inward. An epimerase turns some myo-inositol into the D-chiro form. Alpha lipoic acid works separately, as the swinging sulfur arm on several mitochondrial enzyme complexes.

What makes this formula different?

Both inositol forms together. This one names myo and D-chiro, 1.6 g of inositol in total, with 100 mg of alpha lipoic acid per serving. That puts a signaling nutrient and a cofactor of carbohydrate metabolism in the same short formula.

Who is it for?

Adults who want both inositol forms together rather than plain myo-inositol, and who like a short ingredient list. Dietary inositol comes mostly from beans, whole grains, citrus and organ meats, so low-carbohydrate eating takes in less of it. The capsule is cellulose, so vegan eating is covered.

What should I know before taking it?

Talk with your healthcare provider before use if you are pregnant or nursing, or if you take medication for diabetes or thyroid hormone. Alpha lipoic acid is active in glucose metabolism and has been reported to interact with thyroid medicine, and inositol sits inside the signaling that lithium acts on.
